The SPFL Trust has strengthened its board and links to the women’s game with the appointment of the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) managing director Fiona McIntyre.

Fiona brings significant experience in football leadership, player development and strategic direction to the charity, which works with clubs and trusts across Scotland to harness the power of football for good.

As managing director, Fiona has overseen a record-breaking year for the SWPL, which announced record fee payments to clubs last month as turnover surpassed £1m for the first time, as the league continued to enjoy a rise in attendances, visibility and investment in the women’s game.

Under her leadership, the league has also achieved unprecedented growth through new broadcast and commercial partnerships, increasing professionalisation of clubs, and a rising number of professional players, raising the profile of women’s football across Scotland.

Her appointment comes at an exciting time for both organisations, following the announcement of a new partnership between the SPFL Trust, SPFL and SWPL, which will enhance the charity’s visibility and involvement at major events such as the Sky Sports Cup, Premier Sports Cup and KDM Evolution Trophy.

Fiona joins a diverse board of trustees committed to helping the SPFL Trust deliver its ambitious five-year plan, which includes supporting 50 per cent more people than ever before and expanding its work with young people and football-related trusts across Scotland.

Nicky Reid, chief executive of the SPFL Trust, said: “Fiona’s appointment reflects the strong and growing relationship between the SPFL Trust and the SWPL, and her insight will be invaluable as we continue to deliver our five-year strategy. The women’s game has seen extraordinary progress in recent years under Fiona’s leadership, and her perspective will help us reach and support even more people across Scotland through football.”

Fiona McIntyre, managing director of the SWPL, said: “It’s a privilege to join the SPFL Trust board at such an exciting stage in its journey. The Trust’s work plays a vital role in ensuringfootball makes a lasting impact beyond the pitch, and I’m looking forward to contributing to that mission. The partnership between the SPFL Trust, SPFL and SWPL will create great opportunities to showcase the positive role our clubs and players play in their communities, and I’m proud to support that work through my role on the board.”

Fiona was previously Head of Girls’ and Women’s Football at the Scottish FA, where she delivered Scotland’s first national strategy for the women’s and girls’ game. She is the first women’s football representative on the Scottish FA’s Professional Game Board and, since July 2025, has chaired the newly formed Women’s European Leagues, while also serving on the board of the Women’s World Leagues Forum, shaping the women’s professional game globally.
