The Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) has confirmed that the 2023/24 SWPL play-off finals will be held at Falkirk Stadium. The SWPL Play-off Final will take place on Thursday 23rd May while the SWPL 2 Play-off Final is on Friday 24th May with both matches kicking-off at 19:45.
The SWPL Play-off Final will be broadcast on BBC ALBA as the final SWPL match of the season on the channel.
The runner-up of ScottishPower Women’s Premier League 2 will meet the side finishing 11th in the ScottishPower Women’s Premier League on the Thursday for a place in the top division next season. The Friday match will see the runners-up of the SWF Championship face the side finishing 7th in the ScottishPower Women’s Premier League 2 for a place in SWPL 2 next season.
Rossvale will play in SWPL 2 next season after securing the SWF Championship title on the final day of the season. Ayr United finished as runners-up, only three points behind, and will participate in the SWPL 2 Play-off Final.
Who they will face is undecided with two games remaining in the ScottishPower Women’s Premier League 2. Glasgow Women are currently 7th, a point clear of bottom placed Stirling University. The two sides met yesterday with Stirling University ensuring the race to avoid automatic relegation would go to the wire with a 2-1 win.
It is also unknown who the two clubs are who will participate in the SWPL Play-off Final. Hamilton Academical and Dundee United are equal on points in the bottom two spots of the ScottishPower Women’s Premier League, separated by just one goal. It looks to be between those two sides, with Spartans seven points clear with three games left to play.
In the ScottishPower Women’s Premier League 2, Kilmarnock are currently sitting second and have been in that position for the majority of the season. They will have one eye over their shoulder though with Livingston just a point behind as they are now unbeaten since the 13th of March.
Tickets will go on sale on Monday 20th May at 10:00 via Falkirk FC and a further announcement will be made confirming the participating clubs and ticket details at that time.
Fiona McIntyre, SWPL Managing Director, said: “We look forward to concluding another incredibly exciting season with these play-off matches. The format of the one-legged ties adds drama and tension that I have no doubt will result in absorbing football and a momentous occasion for all involved.
“We’re also delighted to confirm that the SWPL Play-off Final be shown live by BBC ALBA. Having extensively covered the season, this will provide an excellent conclusion to their coverage as we confirm the 12 teams who will participate in our top league in 2024/25.
“The Falkirk Stadium also provides a great backdrop for these matches which has played host to historic moments in the women’s game, including Hibernian’s SWPL Cup victory in 2018 and the 2021 SWF Championship Cup Final.”
Aileen Campbell, CEO of Scottish Women’s Football, said: “Huge congratulations to newly-crowned Rossvale who take the step into the SWPL. I’m sure like previously promoted Montrose and Livingston they will prove an asset to the SWPL 2 and find success there.
“Ayr United have also had a smashing season in the competitive SWF Championship and will be worthy opponents to whoever they face in play-off. These games are always exciting affairs and I have no doubt Ayr United will do the Championship proud.”
