The Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) has confirmed that a record-breaking 4,191 people attended ScottishPower Women’s Premier League matches during the opening weekend (10th & 11th August). This is almost double the number of fans who attended the opening weekend of the 2023/24 season, which had 2,133 attendees.

Attendance figures rose across both the ScottishPower Women’s Premier League and ScottishPower Women’s Premier League 2. In the six ScottishPower Women’s Premier League matches, the total attendance was 3,723, up from 1,780. In the four ScottishPower Women’s Premier League 2 matches, the total attendance was 468, up from 353 the previous year

SWPL Managing Director, Fiona McIntyre, said: “We are delighted to confirm that the opening round of matches saw attendances nearly double, with total figures increasing across both divisions. This is significant growth and a really positive way to start the 2024/25 season.

“We are focussed on trying to increase matchday attendances across the league and, with the support of clubs, we were delighted to launch of our ‘Your SWPL. Be Here’ campaign ahead of the current season kicking off. This has made ticketing information more easily accessible via our website and social media channels. We’ve also started to give fans the chance to win prizes for attending matches, and we plan to continue this throughout the season.

“It was a fantastic occasion for Celtic to return to Celtic Park on the opening day of the season and encouraging to see games also scheduled at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill and Easter Road in the weeks ahead. These matches provide fantastic opportunities for fans to watch elite women’s football in some of the best stadiums in the country.

“I would like to thank fans for their continued support of the SWPL, our clubs, and the wider women’s game. If you’ve never been to a game before, there has never been a better time to get involved. Find all the match and ticketing information on our website at swpl.uk.”
